Question 7
Identify The correct answer is C. Plants useoxygen to make food. Oxygen comes from thewater that plants receive. DOK1
• If students chose A, explain that nitrogen is anelement that can be found in soil that providesmore nourishment to a plant for better growthand health.
• If students chose B, remind them that sunlight isa form of energy, not matter.
• If students chose D, tell them that sugar(glucose) is produced through photosynthesis.
Customers response:
The teacher manual indicates that c) oxygen is the correct answer.
Plants use two kinds of matter: water and carbon dioxide as given on page 331. A similar question was just asked on the previous page #3 "How does a plant make food? Include the THREE important resources necessary for plant growth." answer would include water, carbon dioxide and sunlight (the last which is NOT matter)
Although carbon dioxide technically has oxygen in it, this choice would be confusing for 5th graders especially since the text NEVER talked about that.... only that plants use water and carbon dioxide. Whoever made this question either was creating an advanced question suitable for middle or high school, or they were simply mistaken and were thinking of a type of matter GIVEN OFF during the process of making food.
C) should be carbon dioxide or water..... or better yet, have the question ask the students choose TWO types of matter used to make food and the answer would be both of them.
