The online tests for first grade are impossible to read. The text is way to small and it is visually confusing for students. Many pages have answers where you would need to scroll down to see them all. Some have answer choice A and B all the way on the left and C and D all the way on the right side of the screen. The big black bars that are used for the sound feature often take away from what the students can see since the font is too small. The test itself it way to verbose and the skills are at the higher level thinking, which not all students are at. Therefor, we are not assessing if the child understands the benchmark standard. They are way too difficult. Kids are crying and missing school on purpose to miss the tests from Savaas. They call it Savaas "not easy" bridge...
I totally agree. The test are too lengthy. with too many options on each screen. As I'm navigating students through the test, I recognize their frustration and they just give up. Sometimes I shake my head. I tried giving the test in 2-3 mini sessions but realized that my instruction time decreased tremendously. The assessment needs to be more child friendly. More options does not necessarily equate to rigor. Increase the the size of the font. Access to math tools should be available on the testing screen. The students need to see the math while selecting tools for solving. This is part of Unlocking the Problem: What is the question asking, What information will I use, Make a Plan (+ or -). Solve and Check your work.
