In the first-grade lesson, 12-4, students are expected to estimate units of measurement of "straws" and "string." There is only one actual reference point for straws made in the Visual Learning Bridge of the lesson, in which a snake is being measured with string/pipe cleaners and straws. The length is provided in the video. However, without students having a same-size straw, piece of string, or pipe cleaner, to reference for their lesson, they are not able to estimate properly. In question 2 for the guided practice, the sample answer choice is that a marker is about 5 straws in length. That is either one very large marker, or 5 very small straws.
I called Savvas and spoke with a representative that agreed and suggested I put in for an enhancement for developers to take a closer look at this lesson.
