To Whom It May Concern:
The purpose of this correspondence is to address the lack of functionality for the assessment’s component of the myView Literacy Realize platform in 2nd grade. Please refer to the graphic below for Unit 1 Week 1 Progress Check Up. California Common Core State Standards require grades K – 12 to cite text evidence to support their predictions, wonderings, or claims. This is mastered by highlighting text, either a sentence or paragraph, and providing proof that the question they are answering is indeed confirmed or verified in the reading passage.
To achieve this task, the functionality of a program must be intuitive. In other words, school-aged students from the ages of 5 to 10 must have a system that will allow them to achieve this standard effortlessly without frustration. As the functionality stands now, the systems are providing choices via icons that are not working. For example, the scissors icon lets a young child know they can cut their highlighted text. The copy and paste icons also relay the same information as to how they can be used. However, these icons are faulty and do not work, leading to young students calling out to their teacher ‘I CAN’T DO IT”.
Here is a provided example:
I just left a 1st Grade classroom where one of the student interactive assignments had the same issue, not being able to type the letters in the provided lines or window box. Students were calling out in irritation and the learning time was interrupted because the functionality is not up to par. The teacher was dismayed.
Please understand that these little interruptions are easy workarounds for adults and older students, however, to a young child it is very upsetting. Imagine 30 children yelling out to one teacher and how challenging that would be for the teacher to manage. When a teacher is taking the time to PILOT our program these aggravating moments are sadly what they will remember. We need to consider who our audience is and make their PILOTING time an enjoyable experience.
Please consider removing the tool icons if they do not work on both sides of the UI.
